Project Summary

Assessing the Role of Micronutrient Deficiency in Pregnant Women (ARM-CHAMPS) investigates the burden of micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women and their relationships to adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. It aims to assess deficiencies, dietary intake of critical vitamins and minerals, and supplementation coverage among pregnant women. The study has two main components, the first is to enrol 1000 pregnant women before their 20th week, take blood and urine samples across the trimesters and following them up until they deliver. The second component focuses on dietary survey where 200 pregnant women from the already enrolled ones will participate for food intake and micronutrient level survey.

1000 Pregnant women whose gestational age is less than 20 weeks, from HDSS catchment area who visit health centers, enrolled to the pregnancy surveillance, and consent to the study are interviewed for wealth index, food security, and clinical assessment including malaria and haemoglobin tests. The study is implemented at five health centers in Harar and Kersa sites, the collected samples are processed and aliquoted at HHR ISO15189 accredited laboratory and international laboratories.

This study will take the CHAMPS investigation one step ahead in assessing the effect of micronutrient deficiency in adverse fetal outcomes.
