Project Summary
Pregnancy Surveillance outlines a plan to conduct surveillance among women of reproductive age in the catchment areas of the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network. This study is undertaken in 20 health facilities in the three HDSS sites; Harar, Haramaya and Kersa.
Pregnant women are recruited through community and health care facility pregnancy detectors or community level pregnancy detectors. At the initial ante-natal registration, ultrasound scanning is used to validate the pregnancy status, determine the gestational age and detect minor obstetrical conditions. The frequency of follow-up is based on gestational age of a pregnant woman; service is provided by trained midwives. The outcome of the ultrasound scan is communicated to the pregnant women, and referral services for high-risk conditions will be arranged.
The Surveillance guides life-saving maternal and child health interventions through comprehensive, accurate, and timely identification of pregnancies and their outcomes in CHAMPS catchment areas with accompanying epidemiologic data collection.
