Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health challenge of the 21st century. Efforts to quantify the burden of AMR are limited by lack of data linking resistance status with clinical outcomes in Low and Middle Income Country (LMIC) settings, especially sub-Saharan Africa.

Maternal Infection Study (MIS)

Submitted bybjibendi onSat, 02/27/2021 - 11:01

Reducing neonatal deaths and stillbirths is an international public health priority, yet the contribution of maternal infection, potentially amenable to intervention, is unclear, with essentially no data from the highest mortality settings. We propose to provide a robust description of the association of maternal infection with stillbirths and early neonatal deaths, by studying mothers delivering in Kilifi, Kenya, and in Harar, Ethiopia.

Acute febrile illness (AFI) caused by very diverse pathogens (including newly emerging and re-emerging pathogens like Ebola and COVID) results in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ethiopia lies in the Horn of Africa, where several pathogens of security concern circulate causing recurrent epidemics. Misdiagnosis and treatment of such cases due to limited detection capacity (only based on clinical criteria) remains costly and deadly.
